LadyLady made the front page of the Brownwood Bulletin. Those of you who read the paper saw the striking image of Lady's intake picture: a skeleton of a dog with soulful brown eyes. Animal control found Lady without food, water, or shelter in December 2009. At that time, she was also chained to a fence. Our cruelty investigator went to the scene and spoke with the owner, who was advised that the dog had to have food, water, and shelter at all times and could not be chained in the yard. It is illegal in Brownwood, TX, to have your dog on a chain or leashed to a stationary object for more than three hours a day. The owner was also told to take the dog to the vet, because it was obviously in need of medical care.

A follow-up was made and Lady had food, water, shelter, was loose in the yard, and had a vet appointment scheduled. A Ladyfew months later, animal control was sent for another follow-up and found the dog to be extremely thin, skeletal, and although she appeared to have food and water, she was obviously suffering from lack of nutrition and lack of vet care. Lady was removed from that owner and released to the shelter.

Lady was taken to the vet, where she was found to be covered in fleas, suffering from whipworms and hookworms, had sores on her paws, and was given a body-health score of one (on a scale of one to five). Ms. Abernathy fostered her, and under her loving care Lady gained a lot of weight and became very affectionate (if a bit clingy). Lady now is energetic, smiling, and happy. You wouldn't even know that she had ever been a victim of cruelty. She loves playing in the yard, being petted by people, and getting belly rubs. Every day that she survives in a healthy, loving environment is a day she can credit to you, the community that saw a dog in need of a rescue and took action.

Webmaster here. I admit that I avoid this page. These stories are just a teeny, tiny sample of the cruelty cases we encounter everyday, and they are not the worst. Lady did make a full recovery, and we tried for many months to find her a forever home, but like so many pits, nobody wanted her. After all of our effort to make her healthy and adoptable, the stigma of her breed kept her from finding a home or rescue.

OrphanHello! My name is Orphan, but my foster mom calls me Pupkins. My owner put me alone in a box and dumped me in a field out by the Brownwood Country Club. It was very cold, because I'm only two weeks old, so I can't keep myself warm. I have no teeth yet, so I can't eat by myself either. I don't know why my owner dumped me like that. Didn't he know he could have brought me to the shelter, where I would have gotten the care I needed, and it wouldn't have cost him a thing? I was lucky, because some nice people saw my wet cardboard box and brought me to the shelter. I had to get fed through a tube because I was so cold I couldn't digest anything! It wasn't fun at all! But, my foster mommy covered me in warm towels, gave me a heating pad, and kept me in a very hot room last night, and today I drank a big bottle all by myself! In a couple of weeks, I hope somebody adopts me. I don't know what I am. Some kind of terrier, perhaps? Come down and see me, and tell me what you think! And if you know who my previous owner was, well, give the shelter a call, because they'd sure like to talk to him or her! The shelter is looking for more foster moms and dads for special cases like me, so if you want to help, you can go to the volunteer page and see if it's right for you!

Webmaster here. I had added Chance's latest picture to Happy Tails, but not to this page. Orphan was adopted and renamed Chance. He grew up to be a medium-sized dog with a great family. He made a full recovery and stories like his continue to make our jobs worthwhile.
